First, you will be assigned to a team of 3 students.  On this journey, every group member needs to learn about the role of competitive sports and recreation in the lives of people with disabilities.  Get some background information by visiting the sites listed below; remember to take notes in your journal.

Phase 1--Background: All Group Members

Before creating your brochure, you must understand the history of the Special Olympics as well as the role of sports and recreation in the lives of individuals with disabilities.  We have provided you with appropriate links for several general sources of information.

To read about the major historical events about sports and people with disabilities, visit this site:

http://www.museumofdisability.org/society_sports.asp

To read about the history of the Special Olympic Games specifically, visit this site:

http://www.specialolympics.org/Special+Olympics+Public+Website/English/Press_Room/Global_news/40th_Anniversary/How+It+Began.htm

Do you agree with the statement, "Today, it is obvious that great things can be accomplished by people with disabilities"?  Have you personally seen contributions and milestones being reached by individuals with disabilities?

Phase 2 Looking Deeper: By Group Role

The next step in designing your brochure is to take a role.  Each of you will be researching a specific aspect of the Special Olympic Games for the creation of the brochure.  The roles correspond to the information you are researching:

  • Events Researcher--Research the sporting events that are held at most Special Olympic gatherings.

  • History Researcher--Research the history of the games and the role of sports in the lives of persons with disabilities.

  • Athlete and Records Researcher--Research Special Olympic athletes of mention along with specific sport/event records.

  • Training and Equipment Researcher--Research the use of adaptive equipment and training schedules of the athletes.

PHASE 3--Completing the Brochure

Now that all 4 members of the group have completed their research, written a part of the brochure and selected an image to represent their research, it is time to complete the brochure by designing the brochure cover and backside.  Once the two final  pages are completed, you will import your work onto one brochure and submit it for grading.

Step 1.  As a group, search for an image that can be used for an effective cover.  You may use Google or search the links listed above to find an appropriate image.  Select and save the image.

Step 2.  Research the dates, locations and times of the Special Olympic events that are coming to your area.  Use this information to accompany the image you selected for the  cover.  Type the information onto the front of the brochure.

Step 3. Select the link below to find the names and contact information of the closest Special Olympics organization to you.  Type this information onto the back cover of the brochure along with the Mission statement of Special Olympics; this information can be found on the second link.

Step 4.  The time has come for you to import all the group members' work onto one brochure.  There are a number of ways to do this using technology.  There are also a number of ways to create a brochure using old-fashioned cutting and pasting.  Either way, be sure that the manner in which you choose produces a brochure of quality and can be distributed to those attending a Special Olympics gathering.  Once your work is completed, submit it to your teacher for grading.
